Medical tourism has become a trend that is spreading in almost all European countries. Croatia is one of the most popular destinations for this type of tourism. Tourist attraction and favorable climate, excellent dentistry services and tourism, the reputation of the medical staff and the price competitiveness of Croatia in providing medical services, make Croatia an ideal destination for dental treatments.

With cutting-edge technologies and highly trained staff, the Croatian dental clinic provides state of the art dental bridges. A bridge consists of at least two teeth crowns, each on one side of the gap and a replacement tooth or teeth in the middle. The bridge can be created on your natural teeth, on implants or a combination of the two. The choice of your bridge will depend on the condition of the patients’ teeth, their finances and their aesthetic requirements.

Croatia may be a relative newcomer in the dental tourism domain but its potential to provide some of the most popular cosmetic dentistry treatments at competitive rates has made it create a mark in a short while.

Add to that breathtaking locales, splendid waterfalls, mountains and beautiful beaches, and you have the perfect package. It’s not merely the affordability but also the quality of service that makes Croatia a great destination for your dental treatment.

Stop paying killer prices for your dental care and travel abroad

1460698575_stop-paying-killer-prices-for-your-dental-care-and-travel-abroad

Medical tourism or traveling abroad for medical procedures is not a novelty anymore. Millions of people choose to go to another country to have dental implants, cosmetic surgery or orthopedic procedures among others.

Now you can easily check online if the doctor is licensed or if the clinic is accredited, you can talk to previous patients, you can compare prices and even have an online consultation. Most of the specialists are trained at renowned universities in the world and the language barrier is no longer an issue as the majority of them speak fluent English.

Although things have significantly improved in the medical tourism industry compared to ten years ago, many people still fear to take the leap and cross the border to benefit from affordable prices, high quality care and a holiday in a foreign country.

Myths related to dental care abroad

Even if the number of people travelling abroad for dental care is increasing, there are still some myths surrounding this trend.

The first one is related to savings. Yes, you can save a lot if you do extensive dental work such as several implants, porcelain crowns or dentures. But if you cross the border to have some dental fillings, teeth cleaning or an extraction, you’d better do this in your country, as you will pay more for the trip to get there than the dental care itself. Just remember, the more dental work you need the more money you will save.

The second one is about poorly trained and unsafe dentists. Bad dentists are everywhere, whether it is the US, Canada, Mexico or India. But did you know that many foreign dentists in Thailand, Mexico, Costa Rica, Hungary or Philippines have been trained in elite UK, US or Australian dental colleges? They are also members of the British Dental Association, American Dental Association or Australia Dental Association. You can check their credentials online and also how their clinics look, before making your choice.

The third myth is related to dental insurance. Although many of the patients who travel abroad do this because they do not have dental insurance, those who have can benefit from a reimbursement from their company for the dental work done abroad. Insurance companies also encourage people to travel abroad and pay less for their dental care, that is why you would be surprised to find out that your company might give you some money back for your dental travel.

Sinus Lifting Treatment Abroad

Sinus lifting is a procedure performed by an oral surgeon or specialist. The procedure is designed to augment or “lift” bone height at the top of the jaw. This increase of bone mass enhances the ability of a dentist to install dental implants in an individual whose loss of teeth, or facial bone structure does not allow enough space for such implants. A sinus lift is also known as sinus augmentation, which increases bone in the molar area. In most cases, individuals who have lost their teeth suffer from a smaller or more narrowed sinus cavity that doesn’t leave any room or enough bone for implant insertion.

The sinus lift procedure utilizes bone taken from other areas of the patient’s body, most commonly the iliac crest, or hip bone, or the use of artificial bone grafting materials. In a sinus lift, the oral surgeon literally lifts a membrane that covers the sinus cavity into which bone tissue can be transplanted.

In most cases, the sinus lift procedure will be performed prior to a dental implant, but in some cases, both procedures may be performed at the same time. At its most basic description, a sinus lift adds bone to the upper jaw bone in the molar or pre molar areas in order to make it thicker. Such procedures have been performed successfully for over a decade.

The oral surgeon, maxillofacial surgeon or periodontist will make an incision in the gum line near the molars. Tissue is lifted, exposing bone. The creation of a small gap enables the dentist to view the membrane that covers and separates the sinus cavity from the jaw bone. This membrane is pushed or lifted upward, and transplanted bone materials are then inserted into that space. Following placement, tissues are stitched and allowed to heal.

Sutures and will be removed within a week to 10 days following the surgery. Individuals receiving artificial bone graft materials may have to wait several months for such materials to integrate with the natural jaw bone, while individuals using their own bone grafts may wait about six months for new bone growth. Those utilizing synthetic bone may have to wait between nine and 10 months for their implants.

Panoramic X-Ray Treatment Abroad

Many individuals are concerned with exposure to radiation caused by x-ray technology, but dental x-rays and panoramic x-rays expose individuals to a very small amount, usually between 2 to 4 rem (a unit of measurement of exposure to medical radiation). According to the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements, individuals are exposed to roughly 350 mrems (millirems – 1,000 millirems equals 1 rem) on a yearly basis through normal background exposure to radiation sources.

Put more simply, an individual would need to receive roughly 70 full mouth series of dental x-rays averaging 18 to 20 films per series over the period of the year to reach the maximum specified safe occupational radiation level determined by the Washington State Department Of Health.

Types of Dental X-Rays

  • Full mouth series (FMX)
  • Bitewing series
  • Panoramic film (Panorex)

A full mouth x-ray series is often taken in a dentist’s office and involves four Bitewing films taken at angles to look for decay. Bitewing and Periapical film require the use of small cardboard insets that are placed inside the mouth, which contain film. Periapical films are taken from different angles to show supporting bone and tooth root growth and development. X-rays are taken from different angles and angles to reveal a variety of views of the teeth.

Bitewing films contain three elements; teeth, film, and x-ray beam taken at 90° angles. Such x-rays offer accurate representations of the structure and shape of teeth and show bones, fillings, and decay.

A Periapical film shows some distortion and is able to view teeth and structure that is not necessarily aligned or parallel in view, as in the case of Bitewing films. Distortion is a benefit in this case, as it enables a dentist to view spaces within the mouth that an exact 90° angle or view can’t display.

A Panoramic film utilizes technology that enables a dentist to take x-rays of the teeth from outside the mouth. The panoramic film machine emits a beam rather than relying on film placed inside the mouth. The technology is called a tomograph, which utilizes computer assisted technology to focus x-rays on specific areas of tissue.

For a panoramic x-ray, an individual stands in front of the machine with the chin placed on a structure that prevents movement. The machine literally swivels around the individual, enabling it to take a 360° view of the mouth. In most cases however, x-rays are taken in a complete half circle from one ear to the other, creating two dimensional representations of the teeth.
